USCIS USES TABLETS IN THE NATURALIZATION EXAM PROGRAM

Since October 1st of this year, USCIS has started implementing digital technology by using tablets to manage the reading and writing tests in the U.S. naturalization exam, as part of the agency's modernization efforts. While applicants to USCIS have already been using digital tablets to sign or confirm signatures when filling out online forms, this new method will expand and allow tablets to be used more extensively in the application process. USCIS may still continue to use or require applicants to use paper documents in certain specific cases.

Although the application requirements and conditions for the Citizenship exam remain unchanged, applicants may now use a stylus pen (on a tablet) for note-taking instead of a traditional pen. Immigration Services Officers (ISOs) will provide detailed instructions to applicants on how to use the tablet before the Citizenship exam.

For the reading test, each question will appear sequentially on the tablet, and ISOs will instruct applicants to read and verbally respond to the questions.

Regarding the writing test, similar to using a blank sheet of paper, lines will be provided on the screen. When an ISO reads out a sentence loudly, applicants are required to write the heard sentence on those provided lines.

The Civics test will continue to be conducted verbally and not through tablets.
