Quoc Nguyen, a 37-year-old Vietnamese immigrant facing deportation due to gang-related crimes committed at the age of 15, was pardoned on August 7, 2019, along with six others, by California Governor Gavin Newsom.
Governor Gavin Newsom
Quoc Nguyen legally immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 10 and was sentenced to seven years in prison for a 2004 gang-related attack with a deadly weapon. That was Quoc Nguyen’s only arrest since being released. He currently resides in Santa Clara County without any other arrests, owning a home and holding a stable job, supporting his elderly mother and assisting his girlfriend in completing nursing school.
Six others previously convicted were also pardoned. Among them is 67-year-old Susan Burton from Los Angeles, who was involved in drug sales during the 1980s and 1990s. The governor’s office stated she turned to drug use and sales after her 5-year-old son was killed by a police car. After her release from prison, she became a prominent community activist in East Los Angeles, helping create job opportunities to reintegrate formerly incarcerated women into society. The office noted she has assisted over 1,000 previously incarcerated women. Source: www.sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com
